When you talk to your contractor, we want you to understand what he is talking about so you can be sure you are getting what you want. Below is a basic description of what goes into the refinishing process. Remember that some people might have different techniques and equipment, so make sure you communicate with your contractor and his crew if you want to make sure you know what is being done in your home!
When you bring him in for an in-home estimate, the contractor will help you determine what kind of work needs to be done and give you options for how to proceed. It might only need to be refinished, or he might recommend making repairs first.
When the crew comes in to start their work, they will prepare the room by removing all furniture, making sure that nothing will get damaged in the refinishing process, and cleaning the floor. Next, they will begin the sanding process, which will expose the grain on your floor and give it a fresh look again. Some companies offer a dustless refinishing process, so be sure to ask about that if you want to limit the amount of mess while they work or if you have any respiratory issues. When the sanding is done, they will clean up any dust and apply a sealer or stain. You may want to have them do a small test patch to begin with so you can be sure the color is what you had in mind. After the stain has completely dried, they will buff and polish the floor to complete the look. The entire process generally takes two or three days.
